Known as an innovator in the field of country music, Merle Haggard helped set the high benchmark which subsequent performers have had to live up to. His sound was finely honed in the 1960s, when Haggard and like-minded individuals Buck Owens and Wynn Stewart devised a style subsequently known as the "Bakersfield" country sound.
